To N. K.
Dear K.
At last I have news for you. B. brought me your greetings.
I have not given up all hope of getting a letter from you when you have read The Machine-Wreckers. After so much inchoate work, I have lost my powers and self-criticism, but I am waiting for your ruthless comments.
The sheet of paper I enclose demands explanation. An old German lullaby appears in a scene of my play; and I have sung a tune for it to a comrade who knows more than I do – I had to sing it, because I can’t write music. Here’s what I ardently want: could you write this song for the piano? Ready to print in the text of my drama? I think that my mood has found a simple, melancholy folk-song melody. In spite of the spring, the sun and the young green, in spite of the varied colours of the quiet evening sky, my power to live, my creative power becomes by degrees less and less. I get so tired in prison, dusty, faded, old. And, worst of all, I no longer fight against getting old.
