[Dear] Miss Kirchwey,

I am sending you enclosed the full text of my broadcast from Madrid. It will be published in England in the „New Statesman and Nation“. As you will see from the article, I am trying to organise for the civil population of Spain a kind of Hoover-action. Minister Alvarez del Vayo agreed to the formula that this food will be sent to the civil population of both sides in Spain – according to need. The food situation in the Republic of Spain is terrible. I have the confidential material which shows the facts. To-morrow I shall speak at a committee meeting in the House of Commons. I hope to get the support of M. P.’s of all parties. After my return to America I shall go to Washington to see Roosevelt. I did not only get the support of Catholic priests in Government Spain but also the authorisation of the Bishop of Barcelona to get in touch with Cardinal Mundelein. This fact is to be treated confidentially! Please do me the favour to add a note that organisations or individuals wanting to support this appeal may write their consent to my address c.o. “Nation”. Be so kind to forward these letters to me.

I am also sending you the text of a speech which I made at Conway Hall on the 29th September, when Chamberlain was in Munich and we did not yet know the outcome. The meeting was organised by eight liberal organisations. The other speakers were Wickham Steed and Seton-Watson. I would very much like you to use this article. Unfortunately it has become a “historical” document, but the facts may interest your readers (Perhaps shortened in the form of a “Letter to the Editor”)

With kind regards

Yours sincerely

Ernst Toller.

P. S. In case you cannot use the one or other article I would be obliged to you if you would send the Ms. to my agent Richard Madden, Paramount Building, New York City.

In the meantime I spoke at the House of Commons. They will get in touch with the government.
