December 18, 1936.
Mr. Harry Weinberger
Attorney at Law
70 W. 40th. Street
New York, N. Y.,
My dear Mr. Weinberger:–
As you remember I spoke to you about my autobiography. My contract with Morrow & Company, was made on the 14th of November 1933, as you will see from the enclosed copy.
Upon my arrival in New York I found out that in spite of most favorable criticisms in the entire press Morrow & Company had only sold 1300 copies. Therefore I asked Farrar & Rinehart, who have taken over my future books also, to publish the autobiography. This book formerly called “I was a German” will be published under the title “Learn from my Youth”.
I got from Morrow & Company $ 750,00 advance for the first edition, that means for 2000 books. Of this amount 1300 have been sold; the balance or approximately 675 copies is being bought by Farrar & Rinehard from Morrow & Company. There remains a balance of $ 388,49 out of $ 750,00 still unearned. This advance, according to the new royalty scheme which I shall receive is equivalent to the sale of 3675 books, so that 3000 additional books would have to be sold, before the entire advance is covered.
In other words, the advance of $ 750,00 which I received in 1933, no longer covers the sale of 2000 books but the sale of 675. Is there anything I can do about it?
I am sending you copies of correspondence with both Morrow & Co. and Farrar & Rinehart on the matter. Will you please advise me.
With kindest regards,
Yours sincerely
Ernst Toller.
