Dear Hermon Ould,
I forward to you the book I told you about some time before „Juden sehen Dich an“ the author of which is the official Pen-Club secretary Herr von Leers. Please, show this book to H.G. Wells and all the other members of the executive-committee.
The spirit of this book is so vile, its sentiment so wicked, that I have to apologize for asking you to take it into your hands. Its contents is the very contrary to the ideas of the Pen-Club. I cannot imagine that the Pen-Club can have members of the spirit of its author and his friends. The whole book is nothing but a challenge to hatred and murder. Heinrich Mann once wrote the Nazis assert to hate the Jewish spirit, but they hate the spirit wherever they find it. Thus they try and make everybody who does not humble to them out as a Jew, non-Jews as f. i. Liebknecht, Münzenberg, Erzberger, Grzesinski, Piscator are made out as Jews. On page 32/34 you see photos of Einstein, on page 28 you read at the end of the description the words “not yet hung”. On page 28/29 the remarks about Feuchtwanger, Ludwig, Bonn, and Lessing also will interest you. Insults of the most vile kind! Behind them you read the words “Not yet hung”. Unnecessary to assert that these words are nothing but a challenge to murder. You know that in one case this challenge has been successful: Professor Lessing has been killed by assassins in exile in Czechoslovakia.
That the author defends the murder results from that which follows: On page 10 is read an insult of the catholic minister Erzberger at the end of which are read the words: “Finally executed. The persecution of the young Germans who shot him down was ceased after the national revolution in 1933”.
I should appreciate if you would repeat the questions you put before the Nazis at Ragusa:
1. Does the Pen-Club contest many members who by no means have been Communists being excluded?
2. What did the Pen-Club undertake against the burning of books?
3. Does the Pen-Club agree to the organisations of writers, journalists etc. accepting only such members the grandmothers of whom have not been Jewish?
4. What did the Pen-Club undertake against the abrogation of citizenship to three of his members, Heinrich Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Ernst Toller? What did the Pen-Club undertake against the fact that these writers were deprived not only of all their belongings but also of their manuscripts, sketches of works etc.?
Dear Hermon Ould, if now there will be no clearness, it will be too late. Compromising with the enemies of the spirit is a matter of impossibility. As any person may get in situations where he has to decide whether he is in favour or against, such situations do exist for organisations likewise. If the Club claims any longer to be the organisation of free and peaceful men and women, he has to decide clearly.
Do not worry about these frank words and my tone of bitterness which I hardly can suppress. I am sure you will appreciate it.
Please, show this letter to H. G. Wells and all the friends whom you trust in.
