c./o. Mr. Delahaye

The Crescent Theatre

Birmingham

Dear Mr. Abbott,

Thank you very much for your kind letter and the checque. According the programme the performances will be on Friday and Saturday. Though I should much like to attend the last rehearsal, I unfortunately cannot do so, since I am awfully busy these very days, having to finish this week my book which comes out in German at Amsterdam next week (in English in January). Therefore I ask you to meet me on Friday. I shall take the train you proposed.

I am looking forward to the performance with great pleasure. Indeed, I have seen “Masses and Man” in big theatres performed before thousands of men. But I should be unjust to meet a theatre as yours with the same expectation. You are so keen, indeed to perform my play, and I am so thankful, that you do so. I realize it is the members of amateur societies who do of their best with the upmost exertion of idealism.

That is the reason why I am so glad to come to your performance I highly appreciate.

Yours faithfully

Ernst Toller
