Dear Mr. Unwin,
Mr. Emil Ludwig told me that you are interested in my prose-book “A Youth in Germany” which I am going to finish in a few weeks.
Since I took part in the decisive events of the war, the struggle against war, the revolution and the time after the war, I believe that I am giving a report not only of my own youth but of that of a whole generation and of an historical period too, that very period the present events in Germany are arising from.
The way I am writing the book is not that of a mere historian, I try to paint both situations and personalities as they are acting and suffering, their forces and infirmities, tragical and comical things.
I am going to send you some ready chapters in the next days, as I want the book coming out as soon as possible. I believe it will be read with much interest in England too.
I should be very much obliged to you if you will be kind enough to tell me after having read these chapters whether you want to publish the book and with which conditions. Another question: do you want to charge the translator yourself?
I hope to get your news fairly soon.
Yours sincerely
Ernst Toller.
